The symbol of unparallel beauty is Taj Mahal, standing proud on the banks of River Yamuna. Built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his deceased wife Mumtaj Mahal, the monument has its unique recognition for many different reasons. First of all, it's one of a kind monument which was built by a man for his wife and second, it's among the most beautiful monuments in the entire world. Dozens of titles were given to the monument, including the Seventh Wonder of the World and Symbol of Love, but the actual beauty of the Taj cannot be described in words.
The story of Taj Mahal goes some 350 years back when Mumtaj Mahal, the beloved wife of Shah Jahan died while giving birth to her 14th child. The Emperor was so much in love with his wife that he decided to built something that was never built in past in her memory. And thus the construction of Taj Mahal started, with 25,000 workers started building the monument. Marble was bought from Makrana, a town in Rajasthan, on carts. It took them 22 long years to complete the construction of this marvellous monument.
It is said that the Emperor cut the hands of the workers who built Taj Mahal, just to ensure that no one can recreate this stunning monument. Whether this story is true or not, no one could replicate the beauty and elegance of Taj Mahal, though dozens of attempts were made after that. Today, we have dozens of monuments looking similar to the Taj but none of these have the charisma that the original masterpiece has.
The symmetrical monument has a central complex with four huge minarets protecting it from four directions. There is a huge corridor and a few gardens increasing to the beauty of Taj. The cool breeze passing over the Yamuna fills the entire atmosphere with love and elegance, providing the deceased couple the smoothness of never ending love.
Post visiting Taj, we shall enter a 5-Star hotel to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch. You will have some time in your hands to relax and rejuvenate. The journey resumes post lunch.
Fondly known as the Sister of Taj, the Agra Fort is a massive fort depicting the rich history and culture of Mughal Empire. The Fort was built to serve as the residence of the royal family and the capital of the empire. It served both the motives and remained one of the most powerful forts in the ancient India. Later, the fort was converted into a museum. You may find a large number of belongings from the Mughal Empire here, including the armoury, costume and others.
When Mughal Emperor Akbar decided to exceed his empire in central and southern India, he needed a better place than Delhi to operate his empire. Agra remained his first preference due to its proximity with Rajasthan (then Rajputana) and Maratha Empire. To form his newly built capital, he started the construction of the Agra Fort. After many years, the Fort was built and became the most powerful forts in ancient India. That time, the Agra Fort used to serve as the residence of the Mughal Empire but more prominently as their capital, and it served the motive for many decades before the capital was moved back to Delhi due to some defeats Akbar had to face.
Considering the importance of Agra Fort as a tourist attraction, the Government of India decided to restore its value and converted it into a royal museum. Today, the fort is maintained by the Architectural Survey of India and is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Along with the rich history, culture and beautiful monuments, one certain attraction of Agra is the shopping opportunity. Agra is globally famous for handicrafts, leather items, sweets, garments, fashion jewellery and replica of Taj. Wandering in the streets of Agra and buying a few souvenirs is something you must try while in Agra.
Agra ka Petha is a popular sweet of Agra, which is made of ash ground vegetable. Agra is the city where this sweet was first found and introduced and soon it became a unique identity of the city. Today, the sweet is made and sold in various parts of India, but the sweetness and taste that it carries in the streets of Agra is not found anywhere else.
